Recordings of Bach’s Cello Solo Suites
Since autumn 2019 Albert Roman records J S Bach’s Solo Suites on the “Romberg” Stradivari cello in various churches in Switzerland and France. For these famous six suites, the artist was keen to select six suitable churches, since the acoustics in the respective church rooms decisively influence the sound development and tone colour of the suites. Albert Roman will speak introductory words for each suite, which will be released as a video take along with the planned double CD. The project takes place in co-operation with sound engineers Daniel Dettwiler and Leandro Gianini of Idee und Klang Studio in Basel, Ursus Scheifele (violin maker) and Andreas Graf (Video). As the project will still take some time to complete, Albert Roman will give concerts in-between the recording sessions and, optionally, play excerpts from Bach’s 6 Suites for Cello Solo.
The recordings began at the Roman Catholic Church of St German in Seewen, where the cellist played Suite No. 6 in D major. At the end of August, Suite No. 4 in E flat major was recorded in Lavin in the Engadine.
